Saint Pitirim, Bishop of Perm
New Calendar January 29 Old Calendar February 11
Why they are a saint
Archimandrite Pitirim succeeded Saint Gerasimus as bishop of Great Perm and Ustiug. Even during his time the Voguli had not ceased attacking the peaceful Zyryani, the settlers of Perm. Bishop Pitirim stood up for his flock just as his predecessor had done. Venerated as a hierarch, a bishop who shepherded the Church in holiness.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Pitirim as a patron when they bear the name Pitirim at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on January 29. As a bishop, he is also remembered by clergy and those who serve the Church.
