Why they are a saint

Saint Polycarp the Archimandrite entered the Kiev Caves Monastery, where he received monastic tonsure and struggled for the salvation of his soul. The Orthodox Church commemorates Polycarp on July 24.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Polycarp as a patron when they bear the name Polycarp at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on July 24. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
