Why they are a saint

The Martyr Pontius lived during the third century, the son of the pagan Roman senator Marcus and his wife Julia. The Orthodox Church commemorates Pontius on August 5.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Pontius as a patron when they bear the name Pontius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on August 5. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
