Why they are a saint
The holy Prince John of Uglich was a devout and God-fearing Christian from his youth. He and his brother Demetrius were thrown into prison by their uncle John, and remained there for thirty-two years. Before his death, Prince John received monastic tonsure with the name Ignatius. Venerated as a right-believing ruler, honored for a holy life lived in a position of power.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Right-believing John as a patron when they bear the name Right-believing at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on May 19. As a ruler, he is also remembered by those who bear responsibility for others.
