Why they are a saint

The Holy Martyrs Romanus, James, Philotheus, Hyperichius, Habib, Julian and Parigoreas suffered in the year 297, during the persecution by Diocletian (284-305), in the city of Samosata (in Syria on the River Euphrates). The Orthodox Church commemorates Romanus on January 29.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Romanus as a patron when they bear the name Romanus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on January 29. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
