Why they are a saint

New Martyr Romanus of Karpenisi was born in Karpenisi in central Greece. He was a monk on Mount Athos for a time, and suffered for Christ at Constantinople, beheaded by the Turks in the year 1694. His relics were taken by ship to England. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Romanus the Martyr as a patron when they bear the name Romanus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on January 5. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
