Why they are a saint

The Holy Martyr Sarbelus was a pagan priest who lived during the reign of the emperor Trajan (98-117) He and his sister Bebaia were converted by Saint Barsimaius, the Bishop of Edessa (January 29). The Orthodox Church commemorates Sarbelus of Edessa on September 5.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Sarbelus of Edessa as a patron when they bear the name Sarbelus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on September 5. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
