Why they are a saint

Sava of Serbia is remembered as prince who became a monk of Athos, first autocephalous archbishop of Serbia, and the national saint of the Serbian Church. The years given for this life are c. 1174–1236. The New Calendar feast is April 27. His name is kept on the calendar with the other holy hierarchs.

Orthodox Christians usually take Sava of Serbia as a patron when they bear the name Sava; Sabbas at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on April 27. Those who share his calling as a monastic also ask his prayers.
