Why they are a saint

Saint Savva of Vyshera was the son of the noble boyar Ivan Borozda of Kashin. From his youth Savva was noted for his piety. As a young man, he was attracted to monasticism, and he was tonsured in one of the monasteries at Tver. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Savva as a patron when they bear the name Savva at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on October 1. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
