Why they are a saint

Saint Savva the Sanctified was born in the fifth century at Cappadocia of pious Christian parents, John and Sophia, and his father was a military commander. The Orthodox Church commemorates Savva the Sanctified on December 5.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Savva the Sanctified as a patron when they bear the name Savva at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on December 5. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
