Why they are a saint

Yahya ibn Sarafyun (9th century) a Syriac physician from Damascus, known in Europe as Johannes Serapion, and commonly called Serapion the Elder to distinguish him from Serapion the Younger, with whom he was often confused. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Serapion as a patron when they bear the name Serapion at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on November 14. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
