Why they are a saint
Saint Serapion lived during the fifth century in Egypt. He was called the linen cloth-wearer (Sindonite) since he wore only a coarse linen garb called a “sindon.” From his youth the monk lived like the birds of the air, without a shelter. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Serapion of Egypt as a patron when they bear the name Serapion at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on May 14. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
