Why they are a saint

The Holy Martyr Serapion, suffered for Christ before the Emperor Severus (193-211). As a Christian he was brought to judgment before the governor Achilles. The holy martyr firmly proclaimed to the pagans his faith in Christ, and he was subjected to inhuman torments. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Serapion as a patron when they bear the name Serapion at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on July 13. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
