It is a common Christian name, in honour of Saint Sergius, and has been the name of four popes. It has given rise to numerous variants, present today mainly in the Romance (Serge, Sergio, Sergi, Sergiu) and Slavic languages (Serhii, Sergey, Serguei, Srđan).

Orthodox Christians usually take Sergius II as a patron when they bear the name Hierarch at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on April 12. As a bishop, he is also remembered by clergy and those who serve the Church.
