Why they are a saint
He was a Russian peasant who traveled to Mt Athos and became a monk in the Russian Monastery of St Panteleimon. The Orthodox Church commemorates Silouan on October 7.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Silouan as a patron when they bear the name Silouan at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on October 7. Russian Orthodox faithful also honor his as one of their own.
