Hieromartyr Silvanus of Gaza

New Calendar October 14 Old Calendar October 27

Why they are a saint

The calendar keeps Silvanus of Gaza among those who died for Christ. Abba Silvanus was a Christian monk who lived during the 4th and 5th centuries. A hieromartyr is honored for dying for Christ while serving as a pastor or, in some commemorations, as a named witness of that rank. Orthodox Christians remember his blood-witness together with the other hieromartyrs.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Silvanus of Gaza as a patron when they bear the name Silvanus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on October 14. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
