Why they are a saint

Saint Simeon was raised at Davit-Gareji Monastery. He labored as a simple monk until he reached an advanced age, and was chosen to be abbot. Outstanding in virtue and humility, Saint Simeon was endowed by the Lord with the ability to work miracles. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Simeon the Wonderworker as a patron when they bear the name Simeon at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on September 4. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
