Why they are a saint

The story of the Maccabees, and their heroic struggle to free the Hebrew nation from the godless rule of Antiochus Epiphanes, is told in the Old Testament books of the Maccabees. The Orthodox Church commemorates Solomonia on August 1.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Solomonia as a patron when they bear the name Solomonia at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on August 1. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
