Why they are a saint

Saint Stephen lived during the eighth century, and was born into a family in Cappadocia, who raised him in great piety. The Orthodox Church commemorates Stephen on January 14.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Stephen as a patron when they bear the name Stephen at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on January 14. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
