Why they are a saint
The Holy Martyr Stephen of Kazan was a Tatar. For more than twenty years, he suffered from a weakness of the legs. After the capture of Kazan by Ivan the Terrible (1552), he believed in Christ and received healing. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Stephen of Kazan as a patron when they bear the name Stephen at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on March 24. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
