Why they are a saint

This Saint had Cappadocia as his homeland. He lived during the years of Leo of Thrace, who reigned from 457 to 474. The Saint established in the Holy Land a great communal monastery wherein he was the shepherd of many monks. Venerated as a hierarch, a bishop who shepherded the Church in holiness.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Theodosius the Great as a patron when they bear the name Theodosius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on January 11. As a bishop, he is also remembered by clergy and those who serve the Church.
