Why they are a saint

Theopemptus of Nicomedia, Bishop of Nicomedia, is kept among the saints. St. Theopemptus was the Bishop of Nicomedia and a Hieromartyr, under the rule of Diocletian. The same feast also names Theonas. The Church honors him as a hieromartyr, one who died for Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Theopemptus of Nicomedia as a patron when they bear the name Theopemptus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on January 5. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
