Why they are a saint
The Hieromartyr Therapontos, Bishop of Sardis suffered for Christ during the III Century (the city of Sardis, or Sarda, was situated in the Asia Minor district of Lydia). The Orthodox Church commemorates Therapontes on May 27.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Therapontes as a patron when they bear the name Therapontes at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on May 27. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
