Why they are a saint

Saint Apollonia was an elderly virgin and deaconess of Alexandria, whose martyrdom was described by Saint Dionysius of Alexandria (October 5) in one of his letters. The Orthodox Church commemorates Virgin Martyr Apollonia on February 9.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Virgin Martyr Apollonia as a patron when they bear the name Virgin at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on February 9. As a martyr, she is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
