Why they are a saint

The Prophet Zechariah (Zakhariah) the Sickle-Seer from amongst the 12Minor Prophets was descended from the Levite tribe, called in the Book of Nehemiah-Ezra the chief priestly lineage. The Orthodox Church commemorates Zechariah on February 8.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Zechariah as a patron when they bear the name Zechariah at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on February 8. As a prophet, he is also honored by those who seek to hear and keep God's word.
